  The headlines in 2019 are constant reminders that good Physical Health is not enough & that our country is long overdue for fully achieving MENTAL HEALTH PARITY!!! ... Too often, we, as a culture, fail to even recognize the signs of mental health relapses BECAUSE we typically lack the discernment TOOLS. So, as a long-time Mental Health Advocate, I am advocating for Mental Health First Aid Courses taught in our schools, on our jobs, and at every level of government.  After all, we're all CARETAKERS of each other AND we do better WHEN WE KNOW BETTER! 👌
• ...Perhaps, one day, we'll even see the REAL CONNECTION between GUNS & MASS SHOOTINGS:  the lack of timely treatment for mental health issues AND the absence of  mental health resources and treatment facilities!   People with behavioral issues and disabilities NEED jobs & housing, as well as treatment and dignity enhancing activities.  In fact, the STIGMA OF MENTAL ILLNESS is still very much with us.

Father of Sandy Hook shooting victim dies in apparent suicide, police say

• ...Jeremy Richman was found dead in his Connecticut office building, Newtown police said. He was the father of 6-year-old Avielle Richman, who was among 20 children killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

Check out 5 Calls: Make Your Voice Heard.  Remind your Legislators:  We still need MENTAL HEALTH PARITY!!!  We still need treatment facilities, not jails.  We still need to reduce the stigma of Mental Illness.  AND, we definitely need REQUIRED Mental Health First Aid Courses!   And, of course, we also need nurturing environments, not just Hospitals, to support individuals & their families emotionally, psychologically, mentally, and physically.

 ...The Mental Health Parity Act (MHPA) was signed into law on Sept. 26, 1996. This law calls for equal treatment of mental health conditions and substance use disorders in insurance plans.  Lest we forget, the Affordable Care Act expanded the requirements for the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA) by ensuring that Health Insurance Plans cover behavioral health treatments and services.  More than 80-million Americans will lose this kind of behavioral health coverage if the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is eliminated, as the current President vows to do.  On March 26, 2019 POTUS45, once again, threatened try, once again,  to get Republicans to kill the ACA.  Given the increasing number of suicides and mass shootings, does that make sense? Who benefits from defunding something that benefits those who are suffering the most in our society?  Politics aside... such action smacks of COGNITIVE DISSONANCE!
